Phonetics Education in Europe

A survey of phonetics education in Europe has been carried out by the Phonetics Working Group of the Thematic Network in Human Communication Sciences. Information about the contents of current phonetics curricula across different areas of specialisation was collected from responses to a web-based questionnaire by 89 European institutes. This information was used as a point of departure in the formulation of guidelines regarding elements of phonetics knowledge that are relevant to students of phonetics from different specialisations. A further aim of the Phonetics Working Group was to determine the needs for further development of teaching material and best practice. To this aim a second survey was carried out to which 40 institutes contributed. The paper highlights both the methodology and the outcomes of the two surveys and discusses aspects concerning curriculum development.
